The language we use
Words are powerful, so we choose the language we use carefully and with intention.
What we mean by 'victims' and 'survivors'
We use the terms 'victims' and 'survivors' to describe those with lived experiences of domestic abuse.
- We use 'survivor' to refer to someone who has gone through the recovery process.
- We use 'victim' for someone still recovering from the harm that has come to them.
We will continue to work with those who have experienced domestic abuse to ask for your preferences and find the best way to be respectful. When we bring groups of people together, we will consult with all involved to agree how we describe them, whether they are changemakers, influencers or Experts by Experience.
You will guide us at all times.
Gendered pronouns
We avoid gendered pronouns whenever possible. Domestic abuse impacts the entire spectrum of relationships and includes not only a spouse or partner (same sex or opposite sex), but also parents, siblings and anyone in a domestic situation.
